Karachi protests Israeli attack

Thousands of Pakistanis have protested against the deadly Israeli raid on the Gaza-bound aid ships that killed 20 peace activists in international waters.

The protesters were heading toward the US consulate during a demonstration against Israel in the southern Pakistani port city of Karachi.

However, policemen at the site prevented protesters from reaching the building.

The crowd chanted anti-US and Israeli slogans to express their anger over the fatal incident, and Washington’s failure to condemn Tel Aviv.

They maintained that Washington must be held accountable for the attack on the Gaza-bound aid convoy.

The protests come after Pakistan’s Premier Yousuf Raza Gilani’s on Monday described the attack on the Freedom Flotilla as “brutal and inhuman.”

The Shia Muslim protesters also expressed concerns over the wellbeing of a group of Pakistanis, who were reportedly traveling aboard the aid ships.

At least 20 activists were killed and 50 others were injured in the attack.

Earlier in Islamabad, hundreds of intellectuals staged a protest against Israel, calling on the United Nations to intervene.

The Freedom Flotilla was seeking to break the crippling blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip by Israel and deliver necessities to the impoverished Palestinians living in the coastal enclave.
