Jolani has announced the establishment of a national security council

Syria's self-proclaimed President Abu Muhammad Jolani, also recognized as Ahmed al-Sharaa, announced the establishment of a national security council via a formal decree issued on Wednesday, as per a statement from his office.

On Wednesday, Syria’s newly established leadership revealed their plans to establish a National Security Council. The council will be headed by the self-declared President Jolani, who is also recognized by his other name, Ahmed al-Sharaa.

According to a decree posted on its Telegram account, Jolani’s office announced the establishment of a new body, which had not existed under the former leadership of Bashar al-Assad. This entity will be responsible for “coordinating and managing security and political policies.”

According to AFP, the initiative emerges as the authorities aim to establish national governance and dissolve armed groups.

Efforts have been hindered by a recent surge in executions primarily targeting individuals from the Alawite minority, starting on March 6.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports that approximately 1,400 civilians have been killed by security forces or allied factions under the Jolani regime.
