A prominent author says the recent wave of events in the US including a meeting between Saudi Arabian officials and President Obama and deployment of American troops in Jordan might be a sign that Washington is preparing for an attack on Syria, Press TV reports.

“So you put those … things (events) together …. it looks like that all may be a buildup to an attack on Syria. I think it is more threatening now than it has been in many, many months,” said Dr. Webster Griffin Tarpley, American author and historian, in an interview with Press TV on Friday.

On April 17, a spokesman for the US President issued a statement saying that Barack Obama met with Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal at the White House and “discussed developments in the region, including the conflict in Syria.”

On the same day, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said that Washington is sending 200 troops to Jordan to help contain the violence in Syria.

The planned deployment comes as the Pentagon has recently reviewed military options for Syria. Hagel has called military intervention in Syria “an option, but an option of last resort.”

Describing recent bombings in the US city of Boston that left three people dead and more than 170 injured as the strategy of tension, the analyst said “We have got bombs… we have got explosions going off; we have got again …very similar to a classic NATO strategy of tension.”

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of Syrian army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

Damascus says the West and its regional allies including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey are supporting the militants.
