People in Madagascar prepare to take part in a run-off election to determine a new president as the country continues to deal with a crisis triggered by a coup.

Poll stations are to open on Friday, December 20.

The vote comes two months after the previous round, where a single candidate did not gain 50 percent of the votes needed to secure the position.

Robinson Jean Lousi, a medical doctor supported by deposed and exiled leader Marc Ravalomanana, won the majority of votes in October.

Robinson’s rival is Hery Rajaonarimampianina, a former finance minister who served during most of strongman Andry Rajoelina’s four years in power.

During the first round Robinson secured 21 percent of the vote, while Rajaonarimampianina won 16 percent.

Madagascar plunged into turmoil after Rajoelina seized power from Marc Ravalomanana with the help of the military in 2009.

Africa’s east coast island nation has lost large amounts of foreign aid due to heavy sanctions imposed after the military coup. People are hoping the new president will help their country gain foreign aid.

The country has experienced high levels of poverty and an average income rate of less than two dollars a day.

A parliamentary vote is also scheduled to be held on Friday.
