355185_shootingA man wanted in a homicide was shot dead after he opened fire on police officers in Washington D.C.

The shooting occurred when the police officers, part of a regional task force that includes D.C. police and the US Marshal’s Office, were seeking to serve an arrest warrant on K Street northwest early Tuesday morning, the Associated Press reports.

The man came out of a Northwest Washington residence with a gun and opened fire on officers, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said. The officers returned fire killing the suspect.

The incident occurred about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday between First and K streets NW in the Sursum Corda neighborhood between NoMa and Union Station, police said.

Police confirmed that the man who was killed was the man wanted in a homicide.

Lanier said officials would release the man’s name once his family is notified.

No police officers were injured in the incident, according to officer Araz Alali, a D.C. police spokesman.

K Street northwest is closed between New Jersey Avenue and North Capitol Street.
