Thousands of Moroccan union workers are marching through downtown Casablanca to demand promised reforms and protest at the government’s austerity plans.

On Sunday, about eight thousand people, including laborers, civil servants and teachers, participated in the demonstration at the call of the country’s three main labor unions.

Many protestors are disappointed with Prime Minister Abdelileh Benkirane who took office in 2011. They are upset with energy subsidy cuts, a falling standard of living, lack of jobs, and low salaries.

A large number of anti-riot police and paramilitary forces have been deployed to prevent any unwanted incident of violence.

Human rights and civil groups as well as pro-reform movement known as February 20 have also joined the rally.

They also demanded constitutional reforms that would reduce King Mohammed VI’s powers and make the justice system more independent.

The king has already announced some reforms in an effort to silence protesters, who want an end to corruption, torture, and unemployment. But protesters say the ruling monarchy must make serious changes to the way it is running the country.

Dozens of activists have reportedly been arrested since Morocco’s pro-reform movement began in 2011. Campaigners say dozens of activists remain in prison.

Morocco has largely escaped large-scale protests, which has caused upheaval throughout the North Africa.
