Over 600,000 Syrians are now registered as refugees: UNHCR

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says 100,000 more Syrians left the country over the past month, and the total number of refugees has now topped the 600,000 mark.

The UN refugee agency announced on Friday that a total of 612,134 Syrians had been registered or were in the process of being registered as refugees in Syria’s neighboring countries and North Africa.

The UNHCR office said nearly 176,600 refugees have been registered in Jordan, and 1,100 Syrians cross the Jordanian border every day.

UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards said that “many refugees in both camp and non-camp situations are facing particularly cold and damp conditions.”

“Many of those arriving have been barefoot, with their clothing soaked and covered in mud and snow,” he added.

Meanwhile, UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi wrapped up talks in Geneva with US and Russian representatives, during which he again rejected all calls for a military solution to the Syria crisis.

“We stressed again that in our view, there was no military solution to this conflict,” Brahimi said on Friday after meetings with US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov at the United Nations European headquarters.

“We are all very, very deeply aware of the immense suffering of the Syrian people, which has gone for far too long. We all stressed the need for a speedy end to the bloodshed, to the destruction, and all forms of violence in Syria,” the Associated Press quoted him as saying.

Brahimi reiterated his support for an agreement the major powers hammered out in Geneva in June 2012, which called for the establishment of a new governing body for Syria that would “exercise full executive powers” during a transition period.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants fighting the Syrian government are foreign nationals.

And several international human rights organizations say the foreign-sponsored militants have committed war crimes.
