Mortar shells fired by foreign-backed militants have hit schools in the Syrian capital, Damascus, killing a child and injuring dozens of others.

Local media reported that mortar shells targeted an elementary school in Bab Touma neighborhood on Tuesday. The attack killed a child and injured 36 other people, mostly children, official SANA news agency reported.

Another mortar shell hit a cluster of schools near a church in Damascus, wounding five people.

On April 13, one mortar shell landed on a bus in the Syrian capital, killing a girl. Also in the day a woman and a child were killed in another mortar attack on the al-Na’ourah neighborhood in the city of Idlib.

The recent attacks come as foreign-backed militants have suffered big losses inflicted by the Syrian army over the past few months.

On Monday, government forces retook full control of three strategic towns of al-Sarkha, Bakha’a and al-Jibbeh in the Qalamoun region near the Lebanese border.

Syrian forces also recaptured the historic town of Ma’loula, located about 60 kilometers northeast of Damascus.

On Sunday, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said the war in Syria has shifted strongly in favor of the government forces as they have made continuous gains against the foreign-backed Takfiri militants.
