US ‘paying’ Saudi Arabia to pound Yemen: Analyst
The United States is playing a very deceitful role through showing a concerned face about the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, but it is paying Saudi Arabia to pound the impoverished country, says a geopolitical analyst.
This shows Washington’s hypocrisy “because they can’t see that Yemen will be directed by actually a democratic government [and] because they want to control Yemen,” Peter Koenig told Press TV on Wednesday.
Koenig made the remarks while commenting on a statement by US Secretary of State John Kerry that said he would talk to Saudi Arabian officials to consider temporary halts in airstrikes against Yemen in a bid to facilitate humanitarian aid operations.
Kerry is scheduled to arrive in Riyadh after he paid visit to the African nation of Djibouti, home to the main US military base on the continent, just across the Gulf of Aden from Yemen and Saudi Arabia.
The US is paying “Saudi Arabia and Qatar to attack them [people of Yemen] and then Kerry comes at the humanitarian gesture, financing $2 million to help Djibouti to accept strategies and security aid or whatever they say they do to provide humanitarian aid to Yemen,” Koenig said.
“This is absolutely unbelievable,” he said. “I would just simply make the comment that this is a murder of the first rank, of the first degree what the US is instigating through other countries, through proxies.”
Saudi Arabia launched airstrikes on March 26, against the Ansarullah fighters of the Houthi movement, without a United Nations mandate, in a bid to restore power to the country’s fugitive former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.
Koenig went on to say that the United States cannot allow democracy in Yemen “because the port of Aden is very important for them. It’s a very strategic position.”
The United States wants former Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh “back or Hadi and both of them are puppets of the United States. They do whatever the United States wants them to do,” said the geopolitical analyst.
Washington has been a key supporter of Riyadh aggression in Yemen, providing logistical and intelligence support to Saudi airstrikes. It has also dispatched its warships near the war-torn country.
