US Aggressive Stance Renders Direct Talks ‘Meaningless’: Araghchi

Iran's Foreign Minister has characterized direct discussions with the United States as "meaningless," citing Washington's threats of military action against the nation. Nevertheless, Tehran has reaffirmed its willingness to engage in diplomacy and indirect negotiations.

Abbas Araghchi, speaking at a ceremony on Saturday, addressed the situation two days following Trump’s assertion that Iran is open to direct negotiations with his administration.

Trump has consistently issued threats of military intervention towards Iran and has dispatched a formal letter to the nation, prompting a reply from Iranian authorities.

Araghchi stated that the substance and tone of Iran’s letter aligned with that of Trump, all the while maintaining the potential for diplomatic engagement.

He stated that engaging in direct negotiations would be futile with a party that routinely threatens the use of force, contravening the UN Charter, and exhibits inconsistent positions across its officials.

Nonetheless, a commitment to diplomacy persists, with a readiness to pursue indirect negotiations as a pathway forward.

The senior diplomat addressed the United States’ decision to unilaterally withdraw from the 2015 nuclear agreement, officially termed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, despite Iran’s proactive efforts to demonstrate the non-military intent of its nuclear program.

The Islamic Republic has expressed its readiness to engage in discussions regarding its nuclear program, with the prospect of lifting what it describes as harsh sanctions against Iran as part of a trust-building measure.

Iran remains committed to diplomacy and dialogue to address misunderstandings and conflicts, but stands ready for any potential developments, according to Araghchi.

Iran has emphasized its commitment to diplomacy and negotiations, while also asserting its determination to resolutely defend its national interests and sovereignty.

In his statements, the Iranian Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of international cooperation to alleviate the plight of the Palestinian people in the wake of what he described as Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip. Furthermore, he called for halting the aggression against both Lebanon and Syria.
