The Iranian government revealed on Tuesday that it is engaged in diplomatic talks aimed at reestablishing its embassy in Damascus, signaling potential changes in the Islamic Republic of Iran’s foreign relations strategy in the region.

Iranian Government Spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani revealed the decision during her weekly press briefing held at the Tehran International Exhibition, addressing members of the media.

In response to inquiries from journalists concerning Iran’s decision on reopening its embassy in Damascus amid recent developments in the Arab world, Mohajerani stated, “Iranian officials have previously outlined their stance on Syrian developments. We consider the government that receives legitimacy from the Syrian populace as the benchmark for any actions moving forward.”

She also emphasized that efforts to prevent terrorism are beneficial not only for Syria but also for its neighboring countries.

Mohajerani announced that diplomatic consultations are underway to facilitate the reopening of the country’s embassy, but did not provide additional information, according to a report by Mehr news agency.

The Iranian Embassy in Damascus ceased operations after the regime of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fell on December 8.
