Saudi to evacuate citizens from Egypt

The United Arab Emirates will gather its citizens and fly them out of Egypt, media in the country cited the ambassador to Cairo as saying.

The report, which came on Saturday, followed earlier ones that Lebanon, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia were flying in planes to evacuate their nationals.

Saudi Arabia along with, Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan organized 10 additional flights to enable the transportation of its citizens from Egypt as anti-government protests escalated across the North African country, said officials at Cairo International Airport.

Italians, Turks and US citizens are also waiting at Cairo airport for a chance to get out, causing a great crush in the terminal.

In Oman, 400 students returned home from the troubled Egyptian capital.

The government of Egypt’s three-decade-long President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak faced, on Sunday, a sixth day of consecutive anti-regime demonstrations. At least 100 people were reportedly killed on Saturday alone during the crackdown by the security forces, which were earlier reinforced by tank battalions and army soldiers.

Israeli embassy’s personnel have reportedly fled Egypt. Media sources said on Saturday that helicopters evacuated the staffers to an Egyptian air-base, where they were flown back to Tel Aviv. Israel’s ambassador to Cairo had reportedly fled the country earlier.

Earlier on Sunday, the US Embassy also issued a travel warning, cautioning its citizens against spending anymore time in the troubled country.

The entire Egyptian cabinet has resigned and a curfew has been extended in three cities of Cairo, Suez and Alexandria.
