Beirut Sees Escalation of Demonstrations Over Iranian Flight Crisis; UNIFIL Vehicle Targeted by Unruly Protesters

In Beirut on Friday, hundreds of demonstrators persisted in their protests against the actions of the aviation authorities. The ongoing demonstrations reflect mounting public dissatisfaction and have drawn widespread attention as the situation develops.

In Beirut, hundreds of protesters persisted in their demonstrations on Friday, voicing opposition to the aviation authorities’ ruling that barred the Iranian airline Mahan, which was transporting Lebanese passengers, from landing at Rafik Hariri International Airport. The decision followed a threat from Israel indicating potential targeting of the flight.

Protesters have obstructed the airport road and several major thoroughfares in the heart of the capital, setting fire to tires and vocally opposing recent Zionist actions. The demonstrators are calling on Lebanese authorities to take a firm stand against these violations.

Recent reports indicate that the roadway leading to Beirut airport has been reopened. An Al-Manar correspondent highlighted that unruly demonstrators targeted a UNIFIL vehicle, an act that was condemned by the peaceful protesters.

In a recent statement, UNIFIL reported that the outgoing Deputy Force Commander suffered injuries in an attack while he was on his way home following the conclusion of his mission.

The statement expressed deep shock and condemnation over the egregious assault on peacekeepers dedicated to restoring security and stability in southern Lebanon amid challenging circumstances.

UNIFIL has urged Lebanese authorities to launch a comprehensive and prompt investigation, emphasizing the need for accountability and the prosecution of those accountable for the incident.

On Friday, the Lebanese Army released a statement indicating that multiple regions, notably around Rafik Hariri International Airport, are experiencing demonstrations involving assaults on army personnel and United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) vehicles. Protestors are also reportedly attempting to block access to the airport road.

The Army Command has issued a warning to citizens about persisting in activities that could exacerbate internal tensions, potentially leading to severe consequences during this critical period for the nation.

In a recent statement, the military units affirmed their ongoing commitment to security maintenance operations, vowing to decisively prevent any breaches of civil peace and apprehend individuals who compromise public safety.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport issued a statement on Friday, affirming that it is actively overseeing developments concerning the Iranian aircraft and the return of Lebanese nationals. The ministry detailed its continued efforts to ensure their safe repatriation.
