Millions join anti US and Saudi backed-Saleh regime rally in Yemen

Millions of protesters have taken to the streets across Yemen, calling for an escalation in revolutionary activities and the downfall of the regime of Ali Abdullah Saleh, Press TV reports.

While Saleh still clings to power, protesters staged mass rallies on Friday in the capital Sana’a and reiterated that they would not back down until the ruler’s ouster.

“This is a true revolution” and “Free people! Continue with this revolt! It is for the good!” the protesters chanted.

“This government is indeed trying to lead this country into civil war. They will be held accountable for this action in this life and the hereafter,” said one of the organizers of the protest in Sana’a.

The supporters of the revolution also condemn the government’s continued assaults on peaceful protesters.

This week, the violent crackdown of the Saleh regime has left at least six people dead and many more injured.

“We have come all over the country by Allah’s will, we shall be victorious over the regime,” a protester told Press TV.

After the holy month of Ramadan, the anti-government protests have gained momentum as more citizens and army officers have joined the opposition.

Due to the unrelenting government crackdown on peaceful protests and opposition figures, the Yemeni National Council has condemned the US and the EU for their failure to stop persisting atrocities of the Saleh regime and for their refusal to take decisive measures to end the regime.

Protesters also chanted anti-US and anti-Saudi slogans and rejected a peace initiative proposed by Saudi-led Arab states of the Persian Gulf, as they insist that the initiative has only offered the government more time to carry out further military operations.

The demonstrators say the government’s months-long crackdown will not lessen the revolutionary fervor and that it has only allowed more people to voice their support for change.

Meanwhile, pro-Saleh demonstrators gathered in Sana’a’s Sabiine Square and demanded the return of Saleh, who is reportedly recovering in Saudi Arabia from bomb blast wounds suffered in a June attack on his palace.
