US President Barack Obama has repeated Washington’s call for the overthrow of the legitimate government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

During a key speech in al-Quds (Jerusalem) on Thursday, Obama asserted that Assad must step down so that Syria’s “future can begin.”

“America will also insist that the Syrian people have the right to be freed from the grip of a dictator,” he said.

The remarks come amid continued attempts made by Britain and France to arm anti-Assad militants even without an agreement with other European Union nations to lift a current arms embargo on the Arab country.

On March 18, US Secretary of State John Kerry said “Obama has made it clear that the United States does not stand in the way of other countries that have made a decision to provide arms, whether it’s France or Britain or others.”

However, Several European countries have voiced opposition to the influx of arms into the crisis-hit country warning that increasing the number of weapons on the ground will intensify the Syrian conflict.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of Syrian army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the insurgents are foreign nationals.

Damascus says the West and its regional allies including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey are supporting the armed groups.
