Official: 98% of Pharmaceutical Needs Provide Domestically

Food and Drug Administration Head Bahram Daraei said that 98 percent of Iran's medicinal needs is manufactured locally, and added that his country is among the world top 20 nations in making generic drugs with high-tech.

“With the help of young pharmacists, we managed to produce 98% of the medicines we need, and Iran is among the 20 countries in the world that produce medicine,” Daraei stated on Saturday.

He noted that all of Iran’s drug and health systems have been sanctioned by the enemies although they claim the opposite, referring to the US sanctions against Iran that Washington claims hasn’t included humanitarian goods.

“Iran produced six coronavirus vaccine platforms and was successful in containing the pandemic,” the official continued.

He also praised the medical system designed by the government to manage drug distribution in the country, stating that it has decreased medicine trafficking.

In recent years, patients in Iran have severely suffered the lack of medicine due to Washington’s harsh sanctions against Tehran.

The United States launched the so-called maximum pressure campaign of sanctions against Iran in 2018, after unilaterally exiting the 2015 nuclear deal.

The sanctions have restricted the financial channels necessary to pay for basic goods and medicine, undermining supply chains by limiting the number of suppliers willing to facilitate sales of humanitarian goods to the country.

Iran has repeatedly denounced the sanctions as an act of “economic war”, “economic terrorism”, and “medical terrorism”. Tehran has condemned as “crime against humanity” the imposition of sanctions against the Iranian nation by the United States, and stressed such unilateral restrictive measures have put the lives of vulnerable people at risk by hampering their access to medicine.

World leaders have time and again called on Washington to exempt humanitarian and medicinal supplies from the list of its anti-Iran sanctions but to no avail.
