20 demonstrators killed as Nigerian forces launched an assault on a Quds Day demonstration in Abuja
Security forces in Nigeria's capital city opened fire on an International Quds Day demonstration, resulting in the deaths and injuries of dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters.

Reports indicate that at least 19 demonstrators lost their lives and numerous others sustained injuries in Abuja on Friday.
Video obtained from the scene depicts security forces establishing a perimeter as demonstrators seek shelter amid the sound of gunfire. The footage also captures soldiers removing the body of a civilian from the street and placing it into a pickup truck, while also apprehending two other protesters, forcing them into a separate vehicle.
The Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has voiced apprehension regarding potential assaults on demonstrators following revelations that Nigerian authorities are allegedly preparing under the guise of launching an attack.
An internal letter obtained by the IHRC reveals that the Office of the National Security Adviser emphasized the need to halt the al-Quds Day demonstration to “prevent a breach of the peace” by pro-Palestinian protesters.
In a leaked communique, Nigerian authorities expressed concern that while pro-Palestinian demonstrations remained peaceful, there was potential for the protesters to pursue justice by targeting US and Israeli interests within the country. As a precautionary measure, the authorities stated that these demonstrations should be halted.
In recent years, Nigerian officials with pro-Israel affiliations have employed this strategy to incite security forces to launch aggressive crackdowns on protestors.
At least one individual lost their life and numerous others sustained injuries when police opened fire during a Quds Day demonstration in Abuja in 2023.
In 2014, Nigerian security forces reportedly opened fire during a demonstration in Zaria, resulting in the deaths of 34 protesters.
The global observance of Quds Day takes place annually on the last Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, drawing pro-Palestinian demonstrators who gather to express solidarity with the Palestinian people.
