Plane crash in northwestern Peru kills 9: Officials

Nine people have been killed when a small airplane carrying mining company personnel crashed in northwestern Peru, officials say.

The small jet crashed Wednesday morning after getting ensnared in power lines, just minutes before landing at an airport in the La Libertad region, AFP reported.

“Seven passengers and two crew members died in the accident, which was due to bad weather and their getting hung up in a high-tension cable,” said Colonel Roger Torres Mendoza, the police chief of La Libertad region.

The airplane was chartered by a small Peruvian company, Marsa, which owns a gold mine in the region.

Residents in the region said they found the plane’s wreckage in a ravine alongside a highway.
