Iran hit ‘israeli’ military, intelligence bases linked to Syria attack: FM

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has highlighted the "precise and calculated" nature of Operation True Promise, during which Israeli military and intelligence bases linked to the attack on Iran's diplomatic premises in Syria were targeted.

Amir-Abdollahian made the remarks in a phone conversation with his Japanese counterpart, Yōko Kamikawa, on Tuesday.

He said the unprecedented missile and drone strike was carried out “within the framework of legitimate defense” and as a “punitive warning” to Israel for its brazen attack on Iran’s embassy in Damascus.

“Iran’s military action was very precise and calculated, targeting the military and intelligence bases that were the origin of the attack on our country’s diplomatic premises in Damascus,” he pointed out.

Late on Saturday, the Iranian Armed Forces launched about 300 drones and missiles towards the occupied territories, the first military action against the Israeli regime from Iranian territory, in retaliation for the April 1 attack on Iran’s consulate in Damascus.

Amir-Abdollahian reiterated that Operation True Promise was a “limited” military action. However, he warned  of a “decisive, immediate, and maximum” response in the event of any further reckless move by the Israeli regime.

Describing the war on Gaza as the “root cause” of the boiling tensions in the region, he said Iran will continue diplomatic efforts towards establishing a sustainable ceasefire in Gaza and expects Japan and other G7 members to do the same.

Japan’s foreign minister, for her part, expressed concern about the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the escalation of tensions in the region.

Kamikawa stressed the importance of providing humanitarian aid to Gaza, calling for multilateral negotiations to bring an end to the ongoing war and restore peace and stability to the region.

She further reiterated her country’s explicit stance in condemning the Israeli attack on Iran’s embassy in Damascus, saying that Japan considers attacks on diplomatic premises as unacceptable.

Both foreign ministers also expressed hope for the expansion of bilateral relations between Tehran and Tokyo.
