United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has condemned a deadly attack by Israel against a UN school in the besieged Gaza Strip.

“It is outrageous. It is unjustifiable. And it demands accountability and justice,” said the UN chief in Costa Rica on Wednesday.

At least 15 Palestinians taking shelter in the UN-run school were killed by Israeli shelling against the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip around dawn.

There were many women and children among the 3,300 Palestinians who were taking refuge there, according to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

The agency released a statement after its representatives visited the attack scene and examined fragments.

“I call on the international community to take deliberate international political action to put an immediate end to the continuing carnage,” said UNRWA chief Pierre Krahenbuhl in the statement.

US National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan also denounced the attack, saying, “We are extremely concerned that thousands of internally displaced Palestinians, who have been called on by the Israeli military to evacuate their homes, are not safe in UN-designated shelters in Gaza.”

Israeli warplanes have been carrying out incessant airstrikes against the blockaded Gaza Strip since July 8. On July 17, thousands of Israeli soldiers launched a ground invasion into the densely-populated strip.

So far, over 1,300 people have been killed and thousands others injured by the Israeli regime’s offensive against the coastal sliver despite pressure from the international community.

The Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, has been launching retaliatory attacks against Israel.
