In a recent offensive, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) captured Aleppo Infantry School and inflicted a devastating defeat upon the Islamic State at the doorsteps of Aleppo city.

This military site in northern Aleppo has otherwise been under jihadist control since late 2012. With ISIS expelled from Aleppo Infantry School, the self-proclaimed caliphate is no longer able to mount attacks on the provincial capital of Aleppo.

6 villages surrounding the military fortification were also seized from ISIS during a joint offensive by the SAA and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF); this area has now been demilitarized after negotiations between both parties. Joint SAA and SDF checkpoints have also been set up. To avoid confrontation between the factions, these checkpoints will be manned by Kurdish pro-government fighters of the National Defence Forces (NDF).

However, Aleppo Infantry School is firmly under the control of the SAA’s Republican Guard. The school, which has a 3km-square campus, is around 10km away from the centre of Aleppo, Syria’s largest city.
