Saudi Arabia tightens security in Medina

Saudi Arabia tightened security in the holy city of Medina on Friday as Muslims prepare to mark the anniversary of the passing of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

Dozens of Saudi troops were deployed outside the Prophet’s Mosque and the al-Baqi cemetery, a Press TV correspondent reported.

The burial ground houses the graves of many of the prophet’s relatives and closest companions, including his grandson, the second Imam Hassan (PBUH), whose martyrdom anniversary coincides with the Prophet of Islam’s passing.

Saudi officials said they are seeking to prevent clashes between Saudi religious police and pilgrims.

The Shias complain against the difficulties they face accessing the holy site under the Wahabbi-dominated Riyadh government, which prevents women from entering the cemetery.

In 2009, three people were killed and many others wounded when the religious police opened fire at pilgrims in the courtyard of the Prophet’s Mosque.

Human rights groups have repeatedly criticized the suppression of Shia minority in Saudi Arabia.
