Sayyed Jafar Fadlallah: Sheikh Nimr strived for equal rights

n00217316-b

Prominent Lebanese cleric said Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, a prominent Muslim scholar who was executed by the Saudi regime on Saturday, strived for equal rights in Saudi Arabia.

Sayyed Jafar Fadlallah said the Saudi regime’s allegations against Sheikh Nimr and accusing him of terrorist activities were absolutely baseless.

He said Sheikh Nimr sought equal rights for people and amendment of the constitution and these have nothing to do with terrorism, reported IQNA.

Saudi Arabia on Saturday carried out the death sentence unfairly handed to Sheikh Nimr.

The senior cleric was among 47 individuals who were put to death on Saturday.

Sheikh Nimr had been arrested in 2012 in the Qatif region of Saudi Arabia’s Shia-majority Eastern Province, which was the scene of peaceful anti-regime demonstrations at the time.

He had been charged with instigating unrest and undermining the kingdom’s security. He had rejected the charges as baseless.

Sayyed Jafar Fadlallah underlined that the Saudi move will have consequences.

He urged Islamic countries to be open to dialogue with people, stressing that violence will achieve nothing but violent reactions.

He also said that Muslim countries should tackle the challenges facing the Islamic world and avoid plotting against one another.
