A senior Iranian legislator condemned certain western and regional states for supporting the terrorist groups in Syria, and said such support endangers peace and security in the world.
“Support and reinvigoration of terrorist groups in Syria by certain western and regional states has increased these groups’ moves and threats to regional and global security and peace,” Chairman of the Iranian parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee Vahid Ahmadi said in a meeting with Director-General of the Spanish Foreign Ministry Manuel Gomez in Tehran on Tuesday.

The conflict in Syria started in March 2011, when sporadic pro-reform protests turned into a massive insurgency following the intervention of western and regional states. The unrest, which took in terrorist groups from across Europe, the Middle-East and North Africa, has transpired as one of the bloodiest conflicts in recent history. As the foreign-backed insurgency in Syria continues without an end in sight, the US government, along with Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey, has boosted its political and military support to Takfiri extremists. Washington has remained indifferent to warnings by Russia and other world powers about the consequences of arming militant groups.

Elsewhere in the meeting, Ahmadi also appreciated the Spanish government’s condemnation of the extremist groups’ terrorist attacks on the Iranian embassy in Beirut which left 23 dead, including cultural attaché Ebrahim Ansari, late November.

Gomez, for his part, expressed the hope that the relations between Tehran and Madrid would further expand, and said, “Given the favorable international conditions and the new moves in Iran’s diplomacy, favorable grounds have been prepared for the improvement of ties between the two countries.”
