Leader of Islamic Ummah and Oppressed People Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei has appointed Brigadier General Hossein Ashtari as Iran’s new national police chief.

According to a decree by the Supreme Leader on Monday, Ashtari, a commander with Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), takes over from Brigadier General Esmail Ahmadi-Moqaddam.

General Ashtari was proposed to Leader of Islamic Ummah and Oppressed People Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei by Minister of Interior Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli who also takes care of national police on behalf of the Leader.

Leader of Islamic Ummah and Oppressed People Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei also appreciated measures taken for the establishment and maintenance of security in Iran during the tenure of Ahmadi-Moqaddam (pictured below), calling for the continuation of such measures.

Ahmadi-Moqaddam was appointed as Iran’s police chief in 2005 for a period of 5 years. His term was renewed twice, first for three and then for two years.

Ashtari served as the second-in-command of the police before his new appointment.

Iran’s national police chief is directly appointed by the Leader.
