Speakers of Arab parliaments flock to Damascus

An official delegation from the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union has met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus.

Assad said the visit shows there are Arab institutions still capable of taking action for the interest of Arab people. He also thanked those countries for their rapid response in assisting Syrians following the earthquake.

The Head of the union expressed solidarity with the Syrian people, underlining the importance of taking necessary action to ensure Syria’s return to playing an active role in the Arab world.

The delegation, which includes heads of parliaments of the UAE, Egypt, Libya, Jordan and Palestine, then headed to the Syrian parliament where they met with its speaker, Hamoudeh Sabbagh.

Members of the delegation called for the restoration of relations between Syria and the Arab world, promising to exert all efforts for that purpose. They expressed readiness to offer all the help needed to alleviate the people’s suffering after the devastating earthquake that hit the country, while calling for all sanctions that have crippled Syria’s economy to be lifted.

Heads of Arab parliaments asserted they will push their governments to normalize relations with Syria and overcome the past. The visit comes as tensions between Arab states and Syria have been noticeably decreasing, sparking hope for an end to Syria’s isolation in the Arab world.

The visit is the most significant for Arab lawmakers since the start of the crisis in Syria in 2011. It clearly indicates that Arabs today seem more serious than ever to restore normal ties with Syria.
