Report: UK commanders spurn intervention in Syria

British military commanders have rejected Prime Minister David Cameron’s calls for military intervention and deployment of troopers in Syria, a report says.

Cameron had ordered the commanders to outline a series of military options, including setting up “safe zones” for the protection of Syrian civilians, British daily national tabloid newspaper, The Sun reported on Monday.

The daily quoted a military source as saying, “When one Brigadier heard the news Cameron wanted an armed solution his response was, ‘you and whose Army?’”

The source added, “They don’t want to get embroiled in another war when they’re already stretched beyond capacity.”

British Defense Secretary Philip Hammond and Foreign Secretary William Hague are also reportedly against military intervention.

According to them, Syria’s possession of formidable Armed Forces and its enjoying Russia’s support totally differentiate the Arab country from Libya.

The British premier had earlier revealed plans to arm foreign-backed insurgents in Syria under the pretext of recognizing their “right to self defense.”

The unrest in Syria began in March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of Army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence

Syria accuses Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, and some Western countries of fanning the flames of the violence.
