Strict curfew imposed in Kashmir

New Delhi has imposed a strict curfew on Indian-administered Kashmir a day after 18 people lost their lives during pro-independence rallies in the region.

Thousands of heavily-armed police and paramilitary troops have been deployed in Kashmir to prevent further anti-India demonstrations.

Security forces are patrolling the streets of the Kashmir’s capital city of Srinagar and calling on people to stay indoors.

On Monday, tens of thousands of Kashmiris staged a protest in several cities to protest Indian rule, as well as the desecration of the holy Quran in the United States. One police officer and 17 civilians were killed after government forces opened fire on the protesters.

More than 180 people, including security forces, were injured during the clashes.

Kashmir has been rocked by a wave of protests since the death of a teenager back in June. He was killed when Indian police fired teargas shells during an anti-India demonstration.

The three months of clashes have left 87 civilians dead, in general killed by security forces.
