Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan

A Canadian soldier has been killed after an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated while he was on a foot patrol in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province.

Canada’s Department of National Defense identified the dead soldier as Sergeant Martin Goudreault.

The IED exploded Sunday morning in the Panjwayi District of Kandahar Province, about 15 kilometers southwest of Kandahar City.

The soldier was leading a patrol that was searching for a weapons cache in a rural area when he was killed by the homemade landmine.

He is the 147th Canadian soldier to be killed so far in Afghanistan. Four Canadian civilians have also died in the country.
