Iran’s Parliament speaker has responded Foreign Ministry officials’ remarks on JCPOA, stressing that JCPOA should be debated and approved by the Parliament.

Iran’s state broadcasting IRIB news center report said that Ali Larijani was mainly reacting to recent arguments by the Foreign Ministry officials and specifically by Seyed Abbas Araghchi, a senior nuclear negotiator, who opposed any JCPOA approval process by the Parliament.

Parliament however emphasizes on its regulating role on JCPOA issue; “the agreement should be lent a legal status and place, and since it brings about some commitments for the country, should be approved by the Parliament,” said Larijani, who represents Qom constituency; “from a political point of view, government bill would have salutary effects; to create a consensus in the Parliament, and the way it could play its role, we are in the process of making a common mentality,” he asserted.

Head of Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi also told the press that the Commission had been closely watching JCPOA issue; “government should present the Parliament with a bill addressing the JCPOA; representatives have the right to raise concerns about the deal since it is a historic deal in the political life of the Islamic Republic of Iran; as the Supreme National Security Council examines the JCPOA, we will give our assessment of the deal to the SNSC,” said the Commission head, reiterating the Parliament’s necessary role in the process of JCPOA examination.
