Winter snowstorm hits Europe, leaving hundreds stranded

Northwestern Europe has been hit with a late-winter snowstorm, leaving thousands of people without electricity and hundreds of others stranded.

Reports on Tuesday say over 68,000 homes were without electricity in France, which was mostly affected. Some 800 others were trapped inside their cars.

Frankfurt airport, Europe’s third busiest hub, was reportedly closed while train services between London and Paris were also suspended.

Weather service Meteo France said that although the snow was “remarkable for the season,” alerts would remain in place for at least another day.

In France, 26 regions were placed on orange alert, as a result of heavy snowfall.

Up to 25 percent of flights from Roissy and Orly airports in Paris were canceled.

Hundreds were also stranded in their cars in the UK.

Also in Belgium, snowstorms caused massive traffic disruptions, with cars being backed up hundreds of kilometers on freeways.
