Armed assailants have killed three soldiers and injured several others in an attack on an army checkpoint in southeastern Yemen, a military official has said.

The attack occurred at the entrance of Shahr, a town in the Hadhramout province on Thursday.

Witnesses said the gunmen opened fire from a moving car at the checkpoint and then fled the scene.

There was no claim of responsibility for the attack, but Yemeni government officials previously blamed suspected al-Qaeda-linked militants for such attacks.

On December 21, armed tribesmen attacked a military post in the same province, killing three soldiers.

Tibesmen captured an oil ministry building in another incident in the province on Thursday.

Clashes also erupted between the tribesmen and a pro-government tribe in the area trying to retake the control of the building, according to tribal sources and ministry employees.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from Thursday’s incident.

Reports say the attack was in response to the killing of Said bin Habrish, a tribal leader, whose death earlier this month has caused clashes and protests in the province.

The tribesmen have demanded the handing over of the soldiers who killed the tribal leader.
