Syrian troops kill scores of foreign-backed militants in mop-up operations

Syrian Army soldiers have killed scores of foreign-backed militants fighting government forces during nationwide mop-up operations.

A number of armed men were killed during intense clashes with Syrian troops in the town of Daraya, located 8 kilometers (5 miles) southwest of the capital Damascus, On Tuesday, the official SANA news agency reported.

Government soldiers also clashed with foreign-sponsored militants in the city of al-Zabadani, situated some 45 kilometers (29 miles) northwest of Damascus, killing dozens of them. Two pickup trucks and a car equipped with a heavy machine gun were destroyed after the clashes.

In addition, the government forces raided a militant hideout in the Khan al-Asal and al-Bab districts of Aleppo, shooting dead scores of militants. The Syrian troops seized a large amount of munitions after the battles.

Separately, units of the Syrian Army attacked gunmen and killed a large number of them in the northern towns of Mayer, Tal Hasel, al-Nayrab, al-Safira, Ainjara, Kafar Dael, Minnigh, Ain Dakneh, Daret Azza and al-Mansoura.

Moreover, Syrian troops engaged armed men in the al-Haidarieh, Hanano, Sheikh Said, Ain al-Asafir, Bustan al-Qasr, al-Isharat and al-Sha’ar neighborhoods of Aleppo.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.
