Takfiri militants operating in Iraq are feared to strike the United States in the future should Washington continue to remain silent vis-à-vis their terrorist activities, an analyst writes for Press TV.

“Experience has shown that these groups are not necessarily controllable and they may backfire on their own masters as al-Qaeda did [in 9/11],” Amir Dabiri Mehr wrote in a column for the Press TV website.

Dabiri Mehr was referring to Washington’s silence on the terrorist activities of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group in northern Iraq.

“In the light of the West’s inaction, the ISIL is feared to go ahead and deal a blow to Europe and the US. The ISIL’s access to a large ammunition depot in the Iraqi city of Mosul highlights such a threat,” he wrote.

The political commentator also said that the US government’s inaction on the ISIL offensive is indicative of Washington’s double-standards policy vis-à-vis terrorism.

“The US cannot continue to support regimes sponsoring terrorism while remaining hostile to democratic governments in the region,” Dabiri Mehr said, adding, “It cannot stay put vis-à-vis armed rebellion and Wahhabi/Takfiri terrorism while claiming to be defending human rights.”

Dabiri Mehr also stated that the ISIL is “following in the footsteps of al-Qaeda.”

“It enjoys no popularity among Islam’s main sects – Shia and Sunni – and it is compatible only with dogmatic and violent Wahhabi ideology.”

Reports indicate that, on June 11, Takfiri militants seized the city of Tikrit in Iraq. However, shortly afterwards, Iraqi forces managed to recapture the central city, located roughly half way between Baghdad and Mosul.

Takfiri groups are reportedly entering Iraq from neighboring Syria and Saudi Arabia to undermine security in the country.
