Top US general in Afghanistan for talks

Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey has traveled to Afghanistan to discuss the presence of American occupation troops in the war-torn country after the scheduled 2014 drawdown of most US-led forces.

According to Press TV, the top American commander arrived at Bagram Air Field on Saturday and is planned to hold meetings with US and allied commanders as well as Afghan officials.
He is also reportedly set to discuss the number of American troops that will remain in Afghanistan after US and NATO combat role ends in 2014, the transfer of security responsibilities to Afghan forces and their training amid other issues.
Earlier on Friday, Dempsey said that he was not “in any particular hurry” to decide on the number of a residual US force in Afghanistan after 2014.
The United States currently has 66,000 troops in Afghanistan, down from about 100,000 in 2010. The US has announced plans to decrease its troop level to about 32,000 by early 2014.
