The Parliament speaker called on the international community to exert pressure on Israel to withdraw its forces from Lebanon

Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has issued an urgent appeal to the international community and entities overseeing the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, urging them to pressurize Israel to promptly vacate Lebanese territory.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, called for action following a deadly incident involving Israeli forces. As the 60-day ceasefire period came to an end, Israeli troops reportedly opened fire on Lebanese civilians who were returning to their homes in southern border towns. The attack resulted in the deaths of at least 15 individuals, while 83 others sustained injuries.

In a statement issued today, it was asserted that the violence and loss of life highlight Israel’s persistent breaches of Lebanon’s sovereignty. The speaker urged the international community to step in promptly and exert pressure on Israel to withdraw immediately from Lebanese soil.

Speaker Nabih Berri commended the steadfastness of southern Lebanon’s residents as they bravely faced threats and reclaimed their border villages. He praised their actions as a powerful demonstration of genuine patriotism and unyielding loyalty to Lebanon, its ideals, and the quest for freedom.

He emphasized that the courage and resilience demonstrated have shown that a nation fortified by unwavering determination and strength, akin to burning embers, is invincible. This homeland, he asserted, is poised for triumph, regardless of the challenges it encounters.

Earlier today, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun emphasized the inviolability of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, declaring these principles “non-negotiable.” He further assured that he is actively engaged with top officials to safeguard the “rights and dignity” of the Lebanese people.

In a speech directed at the Lebanese population living in southern regions, Michel Aoun conveyed his support by expressing solidarity with their recent successes, describing it as a triumph for truth. He urged residents to remain composed and place their confidence in the capabilities of the Lebanese armed forces.

“The Lebanese military expresses unwavering support to its citizens wherever they may be, committed to ensuring their safety and security. Unified under the Lebanese flag, we shall continue to stand stronger together,” he stated.

In a tragic escalation of violence, at least 15 individuals lost their lives and 83 sustained injuries on Sunday when Israeli forces reportedly fired upon civilians attempting to return to their villages still under occupation. The incident comes as the 60-day deadline for the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon expires.

The withdrawal was outlined in a ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Hezbollah resistance movement.

In a clear violation of the truce agreement and an encroachment on Lebanon’s sovereignty, regime forces have remained in the occupied areas, contrary to the terms stipulated in the accord.

Over the weekend, the Israeli military issued a warning to residents of southern Lebanon, advising them against returning to their hometowns. Additionally, the military has erected barricades in the region.

On November 27, 2024, Israel agreed to a ceasefire with Hezbollah following significant battlefield setbacks and failing to accomplish its strategic objectives, despite reporting over 4,000 fatalities in Lebanon.
