The Syrian military has gained the upper hand in its fight against the foreign-backed militants across Syria, with the overall situation on the ground turning to the favor of Damascus, a political analyst tells Press TV.

“The tide is certainly turning in favor of the Syrian army,” said Mimi al-Laham said in a Thursday interview.

“It’s clear that those inside Syria and the Syrian government are confident that there’s going to be a victory very soon,” she added.

There is currently a huge turnaround, especially in the western governorate of Homs, which is known as a flashpoint in the Syrian crisis, and the government has managed to block the Lebanese border to prevent the transfer of arms to the militants, the analyst pointed out.

Laham described the existing circumstances as a “stalemate” for the US, Israel and Persian Gulf monarchies, which have put their weight behind the militancy in the country.

On Monday, after regaining control over the strategic al-Qalamoun region, the Syrian troops discovered numerous caches of arms in the area. Syrian soldiers found depots of explosives, mortars and missiles in various parts of the region.

The army units also discovered many workshops for making moulds used for producing mortar shells.

The Syrian troops on Sunday conducted a series of operations in eastern al-Ghouta and elsewhere in the countryside of the capital, Damascus, killing many militants and destroying their weapons.

The Syrian army also inflicted heavy losses on the foreign-sponsored militants in a number of other areas, including al-Ghanto, al-Mashjar al-Janoubi, Beit Rabia, Talbiseh, Beit Hajjo, al-Sain, Um Sharshouh, in the countryside of Homs.

Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since March 2011.

According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies – especially Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey – are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
