Syrian Army Scoring Achievements, U.S-backed and financed Opposition Suffering More Divisions

Parallel to the military decisiveness on the ground, it seems that Syrian regime had gained most cards of the diplomatic game.

Amid information that the Syrian army has set its complete control over Idleb province, Northern West of Syria, the international envoy to Damascus Kofi Annan received al-Assad’s response on the proposed points.

After a four-day military campaign, Syrian forces have taken control of the armed opposition stronghold of Idlib, opposition activists admitted to AFP.
“Security forces have brought safety and security back to the city, which witnessed terrorist acts by armed gangs,” Syrian TV reported Wednesday.
“The envoy has received a reply from President al-Assad. He will have more to say later today,” Annan’s spokesman Ahmad Fawzi said from Geneva.

Meanwhile, al-Assad issued Tuesday a decree stipulating for setting the 7th of the coming May a date for People’s Assembly elections for the first legislative round for 2012.
In a statement to SANA, head of the Elections Higher Committee Khalaf al-Azzawi stressed that “this is the first step of implementing the articles of the new constitution.”

“Elections will be held with utmost integrity, democracy and freedom so that voters can choose their representatives in the highest legislative authority in Syria,” he added.

At the level of the opposition, more and more divisions are floating to the surface. After the split between the so-called internal Syrian opposition and the foreign opposition, the well known opposition leader Haitham al-Maleh announced Wednesday his resignation from the so-called Syrian National Council.

Accusing the council for lack of clarity on what should be done; al-Maleh said that “the Council had made little progress in working to arm the opposition.”
“I do not call members of the Syrian National Council to resign, but I expect the resignation of many,” he declared.
