Iran Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has warned against ramifications of Turkey’s plan to deploy NATO Patriot missiles along its border with Syria.
According to IRIB, speaking at a Monday press conference in the Iranian capital city, Tehran, Larijani voiced Iran’s opposition to deployment of NATO Patriot missiles along Turkey’s 900-km border with Syria, saying the scenario is a prelude to NATO’s intervention in the region.
He added “We believe involvement of NATO in regional conflicts will amount to warmongering.”
Earlier this month, Ankara requested its NATO partners to deploy the Patriot missile system to ‘protect’ its border with Syria.
Ankara’s request drew criticism from Damascus, which censured the move as another act of provocation by the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Larijani reaffirmed Iran’s support for democratization in Syria, “but not through armed methods used by the Western countries.”
Alluding to Iran’s initiative to host Syria National Dialogue, the Majlis speaker noted that a diplomatic solution to the Syria crisis can be achieved through consultation with other countries.
Iran hosted a two-day meeting between representatives of the Syrian government and opposition groups in November with participants unanimously opposing foreign interference and calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the Arab country.
