A huge explosion has ripped through a Syrian border post on the frontier with Turkey, killing dozens of people there.

The incident took place on Thursday, after a car bomb detonated on the Syrian side of the Bab al-Salama crossing, a Turkish official reportedly said.

There are conflicting reports about the exact number of casualties.

The region has been the scene of infighting between foreign-backed militants in the past.

The foreign-backed opposition says there had been warnings that the al-Qaeda-affiliated group, the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), would target the border area.

The militant group has been trying to seize control of the regions in northern Syria.

On Wednesday, several people were killed after a bomb explosion targeted a police headquarters in the northern city of Aleppo.

The Syrian government holds foreign-backed militants operating in the country responsible for such attacks, accusing them of resorting to such violence due to repeated losses they have suffered at the hands of Syrian forces.

The blast came a day after the army regained full control of the village of Sheikh Najjar and the strategic Ghali Hill on the outskirts of Aleppo. A large number of foreign-backed militants were killed in the offensive.

Syria has been gripped by deadly violence for nearly three years.

According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies — especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey — are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
