An Iranian border guard has been killed by the Party for Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK) terrorist group in the country’s northwestern region.

A member of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) was killed in a shootout with PJAK terrorists near a border checkpoint in Bouralan area, said Hamid Ahmadian, the governor of the city of Maku in the northwestern West Azarbaijan Province

He said the assailants intended to sneak into the Iranian territory when they were confronted with IRGC troops and forced to flee after suffering casualties.

Two other IRGC members were wounded in the clash, the governor added.

PJAK is an offshoot of the internationally-recognized terrorist group, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which conducts deadly operations in western Iran, northern Iraq and southern Turkey.

PJAK terrorists regularly engage in armed clashes with Iranian security forces along the country’s western border with Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.
