A new opinion poll shows that an overwhelming majority of Americans are opposed to a potential military intervention by the United States in Syria.

According to a Fox News poll conducted from May 18 to May 20, about 68 percent of the people surveyed opposed the US military intervention and said Washington should not get more involved in the internal affairs of Syria.

The respondents said Washington could be supporting anti-American extremist groups in the long run by helping the foreign-backed militants in Syria.

About 70 percent of those who were against intervention in Syria were Republicans, 69 percent Democrats, and 65 percent independents.

The poll also showed that only 23 percent of people in the US support military intervention in Syria.

Syria’s government says the chaos that has gripped the country for over two years is being orchestrated from outside.

On May 21, the US Foreign Relations Committee voted 15-3 for a bill that would provide lethal assistance and military training to the militants in Syria. The bill is, however, not binding.

Many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers, have been killed in the turmoil.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on May 18 that militants from 29 different countries were fighting against the government in different parts of the country.
