US accused of ‘double standard’ on Egypt

Mark Dankof, a political commentator in San Antonio, Texas, has accused the U.S. government of “double standard” on Egypt unrest.

“I think it’s a U.S. double standard both in Egypt and in other situations around the world where we have applied our own standards to what we believe any country should have,” said Dankof in a phone interview with Press TV’s U.S. Desk on Saturday.

“The United State wants presumably whatever it is that Israel wants in Egypt,” Dankof said.

He added that billions of dollars in U.S. foreign assistance to Egypt has resulted in the “American government buying the Egyptian government in order to abide by the so-called Camp David accords with Israel.”

Egypt, the second largest recipient of U.S. aid, has received from the United States more than $70 billion in military and economic aid since 1948.

U.S. Republican Senator John McCain has called on the Obama administration to stop the financial aid to Egypt, saying Washington must avoid repeating “past mistakes.”

The call came on Friday, two days after the Egyptian military overthrew the democratically-elected government of Mohammed Morsi in a coup.

However, American officials have cautiously avoided using the word “coup” when referring to the military’s toppling of Morsi so that U.S. aid to Egypt can continue.

U.S. law prohibits financial assistance to any country whose elected head of state is deposed in a military coup.
