US condemns Mahabad terrorist attack

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has denounced the terrorist attack in the northwestern Iranian city of Mahabad, which killed 12 people and injured at least 70.

The explosion took place in West Azarbaijan Province on Wednesday as people were watching a military parade.

“I condemn the bombing targeting Iranians attending a parade in Mahabad today and offer my sympathy to the families and loved ones of those injured and killed,” Clinton said in a statement on Wednesday.

“This attack underscores the international community’s need to work together to combat terrorism that threatens the lives of innocent civilians all around the world,” AFP quoted Clinton as saying.

“The perpetrators of this attack should be brought to justice and held accountable,” the US Secretary of State added.

Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah also condemned the “terrorist attack which targeted innocent people and is against the tenets of Islam and humane values,” in a message to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

No group or person has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing.
