US Countering Iran Act follows Iranophobia scenario: Iran cmdr.

Massoud Jazayeri
A senior Iranian commander says a US law to counter Iran’s relations with the Latin American countries is a new stage of Washington’s so-called Iranophobia scenario, which will result in another failure.

Deputy Chairman of Iranian Armed Forces’ Chiefs of Staff Brigadier General Massoud Jazayeri said on Sunday, “Because of its imperialist nature, Washington has interpreted the enthusiasm of the Latin American countries to expand relations with Iran and the increasing number of Iranian embassies in the region as a ‘threat’ to the US.”

On December 28, 2012, US President Barack Obama enacted the law to counter Iran’s growing relations with the Latin American countries. The so-called Countering Iran in Western Hemisphere Act requires the US Department of State to develop a strategy within 180 days to “address Iran’s growing hostile presence and activity” in Latin America.

Jazayeri said the real threat to the US, which has been trapped in a quagmire of economic crisis, was the “deception and incompetence of the White House leaders.”

The Iranian commander added that, in line with a ‘scenario of Iranophobia,’ Western and Israeli security, intelligence and political sources were engaged in inducing that the Islamic Republic plans to use Latin American countries as a launch pad to infiltrate into the US.

Iran has been seeking to expand relations with Latin American countries over the past few years, describing the endeavor as one of its major foreign policy strategies.

Major Latin American nations have also enhanced their diplomatic and trade ties with Iran in recent years, while their relations with Washington have been downgraded amid popular demands for an end to dependence on the United States.
