US school shooting sprees continue: Report

A new report shows that the number of school shootings in the US continue to grow following a rampage at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012, which left 26 children and staff members dead.

Since the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, 44 more shootings have occurred at US K-12 schools and universities, one every 10 days, killing 28 people, said a report released on Wednesday by Moms Demand Actions and Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

According to the report, 75 percent of the shooters brought guns to schools from home. These guns included semi-automatic handguns and shotguns that were not properly locked or stored at home.

The report also showed that the majority of recent shooting incidents at US schools were ignited by arguments which later escalated into gunfire with young people fighting especially when jealousy or alcohol use was involved.

While shooting incidents can happen in any state across the US, 23 out of the 44 shootings took place in nine southern states as guns are more common in those areas which are notoriously lax about enforcing gun laws, the findings showed.

Since the Sandy Hook shooting, US congress has passed no legislation which would prohibit or even reduce the use of guns.

And yet, the National Rifle Association, the most powerful pro-gun lobby group in the US, has petitioned the US Supreme Court over a federal law that bans licensed gun dealers from selling guns to people younger than 21.

According to an investigation by the Daily Beast, one school shooting has taken place in America every two weeks on average.

Many critics blame America’s notoriously liberal gun control laws for the high rate of gun violence in the nation.
