US Secret Service under DHS probe

The US Secret Service has announced that it is under a federal probe by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for the loss of some computer files in Washington, DC’s Metro system.

According to AP quoting Secret Service spokesman Edwin Donovan, the Friday announcement by the agency, which is part of the US Department of Treasury, came as the result of the loss of two computer tapes in 2008 by a contract employee who was transporting them from one facility to another using the Metro.
The agency reportedly informed Washington Metro Transit police as well as the Department of Homeland Security about the loss but were never able to locate the apparent data back-up tapes.
The tapes were reportedly not marked or identified and were “protected by many layers of security,” according to Donovan.
No details were given concerning the content of the tapes.
The US Secret Service came under scrutiny after nearly a dozen employees were accused of misconduct for taking prostitutes to their hotel rooms ahead of a visit by American President Barack Obama to Cartagena, Colombia. Donovan further asserted that there has been “no reported fraud associated with the loss of these tapes.”
However, the Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the case.
