video- Ukrainians pour to streets to protest poverty

About 2000 members of non-governmental organizations and trade unions from all over held a march against poverty in the Kyiv centre.

They came out to voice their protest against poverty rate which they say is on track for an increase.
Experts say Ukrainian people remain some of the poorest in Europe. The latest social researches show that about a quarter of Ukraine’s population lives below the poverty line. According to the United Nations, 80% of Ukrainians living in Ukraine are considered poor, as their daily income is less than 5 dollars. According to another survey, 40% of Ukrainians have barely enough money for essential products.
Ironically, families with children remain the poorest social class. Tjhey spend 60% of their income on utilities and food. In total about 75% of Ukrainians consider themselves poor.
Poverty reduction remains among Ukraine’s top development priorities. The government is every week announcing the adoption of a new program that will not only preclude a second wave of the crisis, but also guarantee the post-crisis growth of the domestic economy. The Cabinet has approved a bill on overcoming and preventing poverty for the period up to 2015. However officials themselves admit that overall corruption is the factor that hampers economic growth and antipoverty measures.
Experts say Ukraine recorded one of the sharpest declines in poverty of any transition economy in recent years. They predict that authorities’ failure to fulfill their promises can lead to total social upheaval.
