Voting in Lebanese parliamentary elections nearly complete

Voters streamed into polling stations across Lebanon on Sunday, as the country holds a parliamentary election for the first time since 2009.

Some 583 candidates are competing across 15 districts for 128 seats in Lebanon’s parliament.

The vote is being held under a new law, which has introduced a system of proportional representation. The public cast two votes; one for a list of candidates and one for a single candidate.

The election is considered to be a test for the Western-backed Sunni Prime Minister Hariri, who contends with the political wing of Shiite Hezbollah.

The voting is scheduled to last until 19:00 local time [16:00 GMT].
