NAM reaffirms Iran peaceful N-program

The Non-Aligned Movement reaffirms Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities, the Iranian Ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Ali-Asghar Soltanieh says.

“The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) states have always voiced strong support for Iran’s cooperation with the IAEA and the country’s peaceful nuclear program,” Soltanieh told the IRIB website on Thursday.

NAM support for Iran’s nuclear program proved that claims and statements by certain Western countries about Tehran’s isolation are totally “baseless,” he went on to say.

Soltanieh’s remark came after the 118-member organization passed a statement on Wednesday, criticizing the language used by the IAEA in its latest report on Iran’s nuclear activities.

The NAM statement renewed its strong support for the Islamic Republic’s nuclear activities.

“NAM notes with concern, the possible implications of the continued departure from standard verification language in the summary of the report of the IAEA director general,” the statement said.

On September 6, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano released the agency’s latest report on Iran’s nuclear work which once again confirmed that the IAEA continues to “verify the non-diversion of declared nuclear materials in Iran.”

The report, however, urged Iran to “cooperate in clarifying outstanding issues” and suspend its uranium enrichment activities.

The Islamic Republic insists that it has always fully cooperated with the IAEA, reiterating that it has answered all questions regarding its nuclear work.
